Gaucin property for sale. Ref MB1
THE OUTSIDE SPACE
The property is set in a one and a half hectare plot, bordering the river on one side and a hill on the other. Surrounding the property the land is flat and open. Near the house the land has been tamed with mature flower beds, patios and lawns with a poplar grove shading the buildings.
An expansive lawn surrounds the buildings, shaded and protected by large poplar trees. The sound of the river and birdsong is ever present, you are truly in the middle of wild mountain terrain, in an oasis of calm. The Genal valley is perennially green, with many species of trees and vegetation and surrounded by wildlife, from river otters to herons, eagles and griffon vultures.
The view is dominated by the Cristallena mountain out to the south, which can be seen from most of the property.
The area
Set in the Coto del Jarrequeque, it is surrounded by kilometres of wild land and old farmsteads.
It is a property to get away from it all, and yet it is only 30 minutes drive to the village of Gaucin, 30 minutes to the Costa del Sol beaches and 90 minutes to Malaga airport. The closest airport is Gibraltar at 45 minutes drive.
Gaucin is one of the white villages in the Serrania de Ronda, the range of mountains in the province of Malaga inland from Marbella, Puerto Banus and Estepona and half an hour from Ronda. Gaucin is known for its sweeping views down to Gibraltar, the Strait of Gibraltar and Morocco, the mythical Pillars of Hercules, as well as the surrounding mountain scenery of a wild natural beauty. Lying 600 metres above sea level, it is presided by the Castillo del Águila, a castle that was once a Roman stronghold and expanded by the Arabs.
Gaucin has been the inspiration for many artists and writers. The art collective Art Gaucín holds an open studios event once a year and many exhibitions through the year. There is a Gaucin Writers group that publish a short story anthology once a year and holds creative writing classes, seminars and retreats. The expansive countryside surrounding the village is criss-crossed by walking trails and there is a well established group of walkers who take to the hills every week. There are many local festivities through the year, including the reenaction of the taking of Gaucin by the French napoleonic troops.
It is serviced by several good bars and restaurants, has plenty of shops for essentials, antiques and handmade goods as well as a health food shop.
Well connected by road to Malaga, the Costa del Sol and Gibraltar, it also has a train station in the village of Colmenar lower in the valley that connects you to Algeciras, Ronda and from there to Madrid and Malaga by fast train.
